Key Considerations for Health Insurance

If you select a “Family” plan, team members can add dependents if they choose. If no dependents are added, you will only be charged the “Single” rate for that member. We recommend considering "Family" coverage, as it aligns with standard practices in most Canadian industries and meets team members expectations for comprehensive benefits.

Effective January 1st, 2025, if you choose a “Single” plan, it will apply to all current and future team members. Members can still add dependents at their own cost, and your decision will be locked in until the next renewal on January 1, 2026.

Important for Quebec: In Quebec, it is mandatory for member to enroll their dependents in a private medical plan if offered. Therefore, you must select the "Family" plan in compliance with RAMQ regulations. More information about this legislation can be found here.

Customers may elect to offer the mental health program benefits to their teams and can choose among 5 different plans. If one of the mental health benefit is offered, the employee will automatically be enrolled and you will be charged for it monthly. However, employees have the option to opt out of the benefit. If they choose to do so, they will be unenrolled and charges will stop effective from the next month.

It is essential to be aware that in certain countries, Mental Health benefits may be categorized as 'Benefits in Kind' (BIK). However, we do recommend that employers in Canada offer benefits to their employees, which allows them to access a wider range of options for providers and specialists as well as significantly shorter wait times. We do not add a markup on any benefits premiums or administration costs.

Understanding Hiring in Canada

Although the country has a public health system, supplemental health insurance provides employees with access to a wider range of options for providers and specialists, as well as significantly shorter wait times. Our plans also offer global coverage (excluding the US) to protect your employees when they are traveling outside their home country.
  2. 90%* of employers in Canada offer life, accident, and long-term disability insurance to their employees. These are included in most of Remote's plan offerings. (*based on 3rd-party market research from our partners)
  3. You may opt out of offering Remote health insurance or retirement matching to your employees in Canada if you wish.
  4. You will be able to select a benefits plan when onboarding your employee. From there, the employee will be enrolled and contacted with more information about their plan. Remote takes care of all the administration work so you can focus on scaling your global team!
