More Information on Benefits in Canada

Understanding tax implications and more.

  1. Employee Tax Implications:
  • Group Term Life Insurance Plans: The premiums paid by the employer for coverage under a group term life insurance policy are considered a taxable benefit to the employee. If the employer shares the premium cost with the employee, then the taxable benefit will only be the portion of the premiums the employer pays. The taxes paid on the premiums for insurance coverage for Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec are included with the premium cost in calculating the employee’s taxable benefit.
  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment: AD&D premiums are considered a non-cash taxable benefit to the employee. As a result, employer-paid AD&D premiums, plus the tax (if applicable - Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec) are taxable.
  • Private Health Insurance: In Quebec only, when an employer pays the premium for this type of plan, the value of the premium is a non-cash taxable benefit to the employee. The value of the taxable benefit and the tax is included in the employee’s income.
  • For more details on tax implications, you can refer to this FAQ on Canada's official government website.
