The Calyx Institute is seeking applications for a Design Director. The Design Director will be primarily responsible for the creative production of Calyx’s work, amplifying the impact of advocacy through advanced product quality, experience, and design. The Design Director will supervise the direction of all branding and overall visual communication for the Calyx Institute.

Ideal candidates will have experience with leading and implementing design and creative strategy for print and digital materials that yield growing digital engagement; developing brand identity; and visualizing data for broad organizational impact. The Calyx Institute works collaboratively on projects with a diverse, global community. The Design Director must be energetic, flexible, and thrive in a highly-technical collaborative environment. Responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to:

Lead the visual design and branding of all programs, including a unique and coherent visual communication system that engages and excites the Calyx communities
Leveraging expertise in user experience (UX), design, and development, guide the creative production of Calyx’s work and platforms, namely CalyxOS and the Institute's websites
Develop compelling design through multiple media, including web design, social media assets, printed materials, etc.
Create easy-to-adopt style guides for Calyx products and platforms
Collaborate with Android developers and web developers, and drive all aspects of management to build well-organized, accessible, multilingual website through the design and establishment of a clear, tangible, and cost-effective workflow
Participate in conversations that span project management, design, technical development, UX research, and content strategy to achieve programmatic goals
Refine the quality of deliverables and maximize effectiveness of designs through close work with internal teams and organic data collection and analysis
Design user interfaces that are visually appealing, easy to use, and consistent with style guidelines
Collaborate with teams to break vision work down into an executable roadmap and ensure designs are implemented accurately and efficiently
Iterate and improve designs through user research, usability testing, and feedback loop
Contribute to advocacy strategies on digital security awareness raising and education
Build and grow a solid and scalable in-house production team to fulfill the advanced production needs within the organization

Required Skills

Demonstrated capability in leading design projects from start to finish
Excellent communication, presentation, and team management skills
Expert-level knowledge in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign required
Proven leadership capabilities, including ability to motivate & mentor others
Team builder who creates trust and loyalty amongst their team members
Accomplished print & digital production experience
Technical expertise in: Adobe Products, Figma, Canva, and other software as needed
10+ years relative design experience

Preferred Skills & Qualifications

College degree in graphic design or related field preferred
Familiarity and/or experience with the Internet freedom and digital rights ecosystem
