What are cookies?
Cookies are small pieces of data stored as text on your devices when they load websites. Websites use cookies to remember your preferences and browsing behaviour. Session cookies retain data for a single session, while persistent cookies retain data for repeat visits until you clear the cookies in your browser. Cookies help websites provide a more consistent, helpful experience for users by allowing users to stay logged in after signing in once. Different sites may set their own cookies, and many sites also set third-party cookies, used by content providers, advertisers, and analytics services.
Web-based content other than websites, such as emails, can also contain a type of cookies, such as web beacons, invisible pixels and others. If you disable cookies in your browser, such web content may still load but with limited functionality.
Given that cookies essentially enable organisations to read and write data on user devices, we are required by law to provide the below disclosures.
How we use cookies
Strictly-necessary cookies
Some cookies are necessary for technical reasons: to store your session (whether you're logged in or not), to maintain information that helps our load-balancer service which keeps our website fast and more secure, or to remember whether you have provided or declined consent of optional cookies before.
Performance cookies
We use additional cookies to improve the design and functionality of our websites, as these help us keep track of navigation paths and interactions with our pages. We analyse this aggregate data to help us improve our services.
Third-party cookies
To view third-party content, such as YouTube video displayed on our websites, you first have to accept the third party’s specific terms and conditions. This includes their cookie policies, which we do not control. If you do not access such third party content, no third-party cookies are installed on your device.
Third-party cookies are also often served by advertisers such as social media platforms and search engines.
These third-party services are outside of the control of Remote. Providers may, at any time, change their terms of service, purpose, use of cookies, etc.
Cookies we use in our mobile app “Remote: Global Employment”
Mobile apps use technologies which may produce similar tracking effects akin to those of cookies. Such technologies include software development kits (SDKs) which we do use in our mobile app “Remote: Global Employment”. An SDK is a set of software tools and programs provided by hardware and software vendors that developers can use to build applications for specific platforms. In our mobile app we use the Rudderstack and the Firebase SDKs. Both SDKs are, in our view, critical for the delivery of a working, safe and functional mobile app, so their use in our app is currently unconditional.
We use Rudderstack to monitor screen view events, attempted logins, completed authentication and password events. These uses may change in the future in which case we will update this notice. We use Firebase to receive app analytics and crash reporting and to impose any specific app configurations we may wish to impose on users.
The SDKs we use enable us to identify registered platform users via a unique ID we assign to them. This ID is meaningless to any third party, including Google and Rudderstack. We do not use (or share) device-originating unique IDs such as Apple’s UUID or Android’s UAID. We do not use SDKs for any type of marketing or advertising. We are committed to minimising any information sharing about our mobile app users to any third parties.
When we use these SDKs, we need to send limited information to their providers. This information is highly unlikely to ever identify you as an individual, but we’re nevertheless required to provide the following disclosures:
here is how Google, Inc., the provider of the Firebase SDK uses personal data: https://policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites; and
here’s how Rudderstack, Inc., the provider the Rudderstack SDK uses personal data: https://www.rudderstack.com/privacy-policy/

How to manage cookies
Cookies are stored in your browser. You can always see what cookies have been installed by what websites. A number of organizations and vendors offer information and tools to better understand and manage your cookies.
The European Interactive Digital Advertising Alliance website Your Online Choices allows you to install opt-out cookies across different advertising networks.
Google has developed a browser add-on to allow users to opt-out of Google Analytics across all websites which use it. This is also available in the Chrome web store.
Some browsers include a feature known as "Do Not Track" or DNT. This allows you to indicate a preference that websites should not track you. However, while DNT is available in many browsers, websites are not required to recognize its request, so it may not always work. You can get help on how to use DNT in Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Opera.
For more information on how private browsing works, as well as its limitations, visit the support pages for your browser: Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Safari (IOS mobile and desktop) and Opera.
