Founded in 2016, Fluz is a cashback app that stands apart from typical rewards programmes. It uses social networks so users (or someone in their circle) can earn money whenever a purchase is made, following the motto “the more you spend, the more you earn.”

As Fluz has grown, its ambitions have widened. Aiming to become a complete financial app beyond cashback, the company needs the best fintech talent worldwide — and a reliable global HR partner to support that move.

This is why Fluz partners with Remote to hire at scale across the globe while staying compliant and flexible at each stage.

Fluz at a glance

  • Headquarters: New York

  • Founded: 2016

  • Number of contractors with Remote: 24

  • Industry: Fintech

Originally, all of Fluz’s staff — from founders to engineers and designers — were based in New York. When the COVID‑19 pandemic hit, the company shifted to remote working while also managing a sharp increase in both users and team members.

Around that time, two core team members relocated to Canada, and that’s when Remote first stepped in. Fluz needed a compliant way to support the move and keep everything above board.

“Remote played a crucial role in keeping those two employees with the business,” says Amador Pilapil, Fluz’s Head of people. “They handled the contracts, paperwork and compliance — it was a huge relief to have it all managed for us. They walked us through each step and the whole process was effortless.”

With that positive start, Fluz soon realised Remote could help solve other challenges as well.

Making the most of the world’s top contractor talent

To support rapid growth, Fluz was already engaging contractors in the US and overseas, but the management process was manual, unclear and not built to scale.

For example, Fluz was conducting identity checks and administering paperwork for every contractor, holding personal details and contractor agreements. Pilapil says this consumed several hours each week and introduced the risk of human error. The business needed a stronger solution.

When we learned Remote had a contractor management platform, we moved our international contractors across,” says Pilapil. “The change was immediate.”

Beyond cutting the administrative load, the switch allowed Fluz to scale its international contractor base. With much of its customer care team located in the Philippines, this setup made practical and commercial sense.

“We receive contractor support that matches domestic standards,” Pilapil explains. “That lets us engage great people to back our business while creating opportunities for those who really need them. It’s worked very well for us.”

A more efficient approach

Remote’s Contractor Management platform also helps Fluz handle payments more efficiently and avoid the quirks of their previous manual system.

“We found cases where contractors had left the business but the automatic wire transfer kept going,” says Pilapil. “We needed a better solution.”

Using Remote, Fluz now pays monthly invoices in bulk (each in the contractor’s local currency) with just a few clicks. Rather than processing one-off wire transfers, invoices are uploaded to Remote, approved and added to each contractor’s monthly payout. The process is quick and removes the back-and-forth communication previously needed to get expenses paid.

Remote gives us complete control over how we manage contractors. The small monthly fee is insignificant compared with the peace of mind gained from paying people accurately, compliantly and efficiently.

Trust, transparency and security

For Fluz, finding the right contractors and building trust is essential.

“Remote supports this by offering a professional platform that promotes accountability on the contractor’s side,” says Pilapil. “Contractors must upload all their documents and can view their history in one place, which makes communication much clearer.”

In return, Remote gives contractors a transparent portal where they can upload invoices, check transaction history and see when and how they will be paid.

“Feedback from our contractors has been hugely positive,” Pilapil says. “They appreciate not having to email me for invoice copies, requests or to change their details.

Remote makes our contractors’ lives easier. It’s a win all round.”

Fluz can also process contractors’ personally identifiable information securely, which is particularly important for a fintech business.

“It’s a much slicker process than what we had before,” Pilapil says. “Contractors are no longer emailing sensitive materials like ID scans, bank account numbers or withdrawal details.”

By managing its international contractor base through Remote, Fluz no longer needs to worry about worker misclassification or legal compliance. Remote ensures paperwork and payment methods comply with labour and taxation laws in each country, which gives Fluz the confidence to keep expanding globally.

A helping hand

For Pilapil, much of that confidence comes from Remote’s experience, expertise and high levels of support.

“I don’t have a background in international hiring, but the team at Remote is always available to talk things through and explain options,” he says. “We were nervous because there’s a lot to consider, but their in-house experts put our minds at ease.

“Our account manager is always reachable and will either send me emails with context or offer to jump on a quick call to answer my questions. I really value that flexibility and partnership.”

Remote’s support is excellent, and that’s one reason we expanded our work with them.

Scalability is another vital part of the collaboration — especially for a fast-growing startup like Fluz.

“Remote stands out because it’s fully scalable and reliable,” says Pilapil. “Onboarding, managing and paying employees and contractors is so straightforward — we set people up and then don’t have to worry about it. It’s brilliant.”

What’s next for Fluz

Fluz has ambitious plans to expand its product range, and company growth is central to making that happen. For Pilapil, that means hiring engineering talent globally, with a clear focus on Europe.

“We know we’ll have full support from the Remote team to navigate new countries and their various labour laws,” he says. “Having that partnership is very reassuring as we grow the business.”

In the meantime, Pilapil is proud of how far the company has come and the positive impact Remote has delivered.

“I’m proud of what we’ve achieved,” he concludes. “I’m looking forward to expanding our partnership and bringing Fluz to new customers around the world.”
