Employee Provincial Income Tax

Canada’s individual provinces and territories charge their own income taxes to residents and workers. These rates change periodically and vary widely from one province to another. Remote Canada legal entity is based in the province of British Columbia and income tax withholding is based on this province's rates. For employees residing outside of this province, province-specific adjustments to the tax withholding amount will be needed. For updated information regarding tax rates in specific provinces, view Canada’s official tax website.

Health Benefits

Offering health insurance in this country is not mandatory, but providing these additional health benefits can greatly enhance the healthcare experience for employees by enabling access to a wider range of providers and specialists, as well as significantly reducing wait times.

Remote offers five different health insurance plans, each with varying levels of coverage and benefits, allowing you to tailor benefits to meet the specific needs of your team.

The Basic plan includes 80% co-insurance for health services, 100% out-of-country coverage, limited paramedical services, and basic dental and vision care. The Standard plan offers enhanced coverage with 90% co-insurance, higher limits for paramedical services, and more comprehensive dental and vision care. The Plus plan provides 100% co-insurance, private hospital rooms, and broader coverage for drugs and paramedical services, along with orthodontic coverage. The Premium plan further extends coverage with higher limits for dental and vision care and a more extensive range of paramedical services. The Premium Enhanced plan includes all the benefits of the Premium plan, plus additional coverage for gender affirmation care and increased limits for various services.

If a Family plan is provided through Remote, the Canadian team members will have the opportunity to add dependents. If a team member does not add dependents, the charge will be at the Single rate for their plan. We strongly recommend providing the Family plan, as it is customary in Canada to extend health insurance coverage to include dependents. In Quebec, it is mandatory for employees with a private medical plan to enroll their dependents. Therefore, the Family plan must be offered. The benefit rules in Quebec are regulated by RAMQ (The Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec is the government health insurance board in the province of Quebec, Canada). Additional information about this legislation can be found here .

Remote also provides a Single plan option, which will be applied to all employees in the country (current and future), and team members will not have the option to add dependents, even at their own cost.

Employer of record in Canada

Our employer of record (EOR) service enables you to hire, manage, and pay top talent in Canada with speed and simplicity.

What is an EOR — and how does it work?

Remote’s EOR allows your company to legally hire employees in Canada without having to set up a local legal entity. On paper, Remote is the official employer, and we handle compliance, payroll, benefits (including equity), and other HR processes — but you maintain full control over the hire’s day-to-day management and work responsibilities. Learn more.

Who should consider using an EOR in Canada?

An EOR may be ideal if your company:

  • Needs to hire employees in Canada but doesn’t want to establish a legal entity

  • Is testing local markets before committing to a full business expansion

  • Wants to ensure full compliance with local employment laws and tax requirements

  • Needs a fast, cost-effective way to onboard employees in Canada

  • Needs a temporary hiring solution before establishing a legal entity

Why use Remote’s EOR in Canada?

If your company wants to hire talent in Canada but doesn't have a legal entity there, our EOR provides a fully compliant and efficient solution. Canada has strict employment and payroll tax laws, and our EOR service ensures you meet these legal obligations while enabling you to grow quickly.

Key benefits of hiring through our EOR in Canada include:

  • Faster market entry. You can hire talent quickly, without having to wait months to establish a local entity.

  • Full compliance with local employment laws. Avoid the legal risks associated with non-compliance and misclassification.

  • Simplified payroll management. We automate payroll tax calculations and ensure you are fully compliant with all withholding obligations, even when laws change.

  • Lower costs. Setting up a legal entity in Canada can be costly and time-consuming. An EOR eliminates the need for entity registration, reducing overhead expenses.

  • Fewer resources required. With HR, payroll, and compliance managed by the EOR, your company can concentrate on scaling operations and assigning your resources elsewhere.

It’s also crucial to note that, at Remote, we own our own legal entity in Canada. As a result, we don’t need to rely on third parties, which can incur delays and extra costs, and result in a negative employee experience. All our EOR services — including the dedicated support of our local specialists — are provided in-house.
