Types of leave in Albania

Paid time off

Employees are entitled to 22 days of annual paid leave after completing their first year of employment with an employer. Workers who’ve been employed for less than a year can exercise their vacation entitlement on a prorated basis.

Public holidays

There are 14 public holidays that employees can take off work.

Sick leave

Sick leave lasts for 14 days a year, with sickness benefits paid by the employer at a rate of 80%.

Maternity leave

Female employees are entitled to an entire year of maternity leave, starting 35 days before delivery and lasting at least 63 days after delivery, after which a postpartum employee can return to work. The first six months are compensated at 80% of the employee’s normal wages, while the second half is compensated at 50% of the employee’s normal pay.

Paternity leave

Since October 2020, Albania has amended the Labor Code and Social Security with a clause that provides fathers with three days of paid paternity leave.

Parental leave

Parents with dependent children are entitled to 12 days of parental leave annually, and as much as 15, if their children are aged below three. This can be extended for up to 30 days annually with no additional pay.

Other leave

- Bereavement leave: employees are entitled to two days’ leave in the event of the death of an immediate family member. - Marriage leave: Intending couples can take five days off while parents can take two days off for their children’s marriages.
