Types of leave in El Salvador

Paid Time Off

Salvadoran employees are entitled to 15 days of paid leave every year. Paid vacations are counted from December 12 to December 12 of following years and employees must use their holiday or forfeit it — payment cannot be made in lieu of unused holiday.

Sick Leave

In the event of a worker taking sick leave, the employer will pay the pay for the first 3 days of leave. After this time, payment will be assumed by the Salvadoran Social Security Institute

Maternity Leave

Female employees are entitled to 16 weeks of paid maternity leave that can start six weeks before the expected due date. Maternity benefits are equal to 75% of mother’s normal pay although this can be increased to full pay (100%) if she’s temporarily disabled due to the pregnancy.Maternity leave can be extended if a mother undergoes complications during the pregnancy and expectant mothers cannot be assigned to manual labour.

Salvadoran fathers are entitled to three days’ paternity leave with full pay within 15 days of the birth of their child.

An employee is entitled to two days of fully paid leave in the event of the death of an immediate family member.
