What does take-home pay mean?

Take-home pay (also known as net pay or net income) is the sum an employee receives after deductions are removed from their gross salary, such as taxes and other withholdings. It represents the portion of pay the employee can retain.

Take-home pay can differ substantially depending on the employee’s place of residence and their level of earnings.

How to work out take-home pay

Generally, calculating an employee’s take-home pay is straightforward. The figure equals the gross pay less the following deductions:

Income taxes. How much tax is deducted depends on several elements, including the employee’s income bracket, any applicable tax credits, and the level of tax (for example, federal, state, provincial, municipal, etc.).

Social security. In many jurisdictions, social security contributions are deducted; these may vary with salary or be applied at a fixed rate.

Retirement/pension contributions. If an employee is enrolled in a retirement savings scheme, contributions may be taken from their gross pay.

Health insurance. Many employers provide health insurance and may recover premiums from the employee’s salary; the exact amount depends on the type of coverage and the cost-sharing arrangement.

Other deductions. These may include additional withholdings such as contributions to flexible spending accounts, union dues, or other voluntary deductions.

Please note that employees with the same gross salary can still receive different take-home pay. This may result from various additional factors, including:

  • Commissions or bonus payments
  • The number of dependents claimed
  • Tax withholding choices (for example, as indicated on the W-4 form in the US)
  • Court-ordered withholdings (for example, garnishments)
  • Income from other employment or additional sources
