As AI continues to revolutionize the HR sector, Remote is committed to embracing innovation responsibly and ethically. AI can offer significant competitive advantages such as automation and insights but can also greatly support compliance in a fragmented legal environment, both for Remote and its customers.

This article outlines the key principles Remote believes in for developing, implementing, and using responsible and ethical AI.

Transparency and explainability

AI models deployed in Human Resources and People Management processes — such as recruiting, onboarding, offboarding, or performance assessments — must be transparent and explainable to every stakeholder involved. Remote believes that AI should support decisions — not make them.

Additionally, both HR professionals and employees must be made aware of when AI is involved, and how. Clear documentation of how AI systems help Remote and its customers make decisions, the data inputs they use, and how these decisions impact employees and employers is critical. Trust built through transparency and explainability is at the core of ethical AI.

Fairness and bias mitigation

At Remote it’s non-negotiable for AI models in HR to be designed to minimize bias and promote fairness. AI tools and features related to employment decisions must support Remote users in preventing inequalities based on sex/gender, race, religion, age, sexual orientation, disability, or veteran status.

We ensure this outcome by requiring AI features to undergo rigorous testing and to use diverse datasets. Remote will strive in developing and offering to its customers AI products and services that embed and promote inclusivity and fairness.

Human-centric AI systems

At Remote, we believe that AI shouldn’t replace human decisions. On the contrary, AI should enhance and improve our decision-making capabilities by keeping people at the center.

The Human-In-The-Loop (HITL) approach ensures that human decision-makers validate AI recommendations, particularly in HR decisions. For example, humans need to decide on selection procedures, onboarding, offboarding, career changes, and advancements. This approach ensures that AI is deployed ethically and that clear lines of human accountability and oversight are maintained while using AI systems.

Privacy and security

For AI systems to function effectively, they rely on large amounts of data. Personal information processed by Remote is very sensitive for us, our clients, and our end-users. It is an utmost priority for Remote to make sure that personal data within the scope of AI systems is handled with the highest level of security and privacy.

That's why all AI features offered by Remote comply with requirements set by regulations like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Artificial Intelligence (AI Act), and other applicable laws. Remote supports privacy-compliant AI that, among others, embeds into AI features key privacy principles. That would include data lawfulness, minimization, purpose limitation, accuracy, and storage limitation.

In addition, Remote’s ethical AI commitment goes beyond privacy compliance. Among others, Remote is committed to protecting personal data from unauthorized access, misuse, and information security incidents.

Continuous improvement and adaptation

Remote will review and continuously improve our practices to adapt to new and upcoming legal requirements, ethical standards, best practices, and organizational changes to support ethical and responsible AI.

Remote believes AI can support better decision making. By embedding ethics, compliance, privacy, and security,‌ human decisions in HR will be more equitable, fair, and transparent.

Remote will proactively support transparency, fairness, and human-centric AI systems. We will work together with regulators, customers, and individuals when needed to deliver the best-in-class product.
