Welcome to the biggest revolution in the history of work. Employees today operate under a different set of rules, and their needs and outlooks are changing faster than ever. To attract and retain employees today, companies must understand what employees expect, how those expectations are evolving, and where they stand in the new era of work.

We surveyed 1,528 respondents in IT divisions of small- and medium-sized businesses in the U.S. and the U.K. to learn more about the challenges and opportunities they have experienced in transitioning to remote work. That research provided deep insights into the future of work as seen through the eyes of businesses.

What do businesses and employees expect from a remote work future?

Two-thirds of respondents said they plan to increase options for remote and flexible work arrangements for their employees. Respondents in both regions believed more than a third of roles will be located overseas within five years, with U.S. respondents estimating 40%.

Where do employees
want to work?

Local employers take note: a full 81% of respondents indicated that they would move if they could do so without affecting their work prospects. Employers who make it easy for employees to work remotely enjoy a much wider talent pool.

Are businesses doing enough to foster inclusive environments?

Global talent deserves global opportunity. While 43% of U.S. respondents believe the Silicon Valley tech community has lost the trust of wider society, 45% agree that a greater level of international remote working could make the tech industry a more global and inclusive community.
