Types of leave in North Macedonia
All employees are entitled to fully paid annual leave of 20 days. Annual leave may be extended to 26 days if mutually agreed by employer and employee. Up to 26 days of leave can be taken by employees with 30 years of service. Part-time workers can take 10 days of annual leave. The payment for annual leave is 40% of the average of the last three months’ net salary.
Employees are entitled to sick leave for sickness, disease, or any need for health services. The payment for sick pay depends on the duration of the sick leave: - 70% of the normal salary is paid for up to seven days. - 80% of the normal salary is paid for up to 15 days. - 90% of the normal salary is paid for over 15 days. The employer pays for the first 30 days and health insurance pays for sick leave beyond 30 days. In the case of maternity, paternity, disease from work, illness from work, or during the donation of blood, tissue, or organs, the benefit is 100% of the employee’s average monthly salary. These cases are paid by the Health Fund.
Pregnant employees should provide a medical certificate to their employer and start maternity leave a minimum of 28 days before the expected delivery. The employee may choose to take maternity leave 45 days before the expected delivery. The employee may take nine months of maternity leave or up to 15 months of maternity leave for multiple births. Payment for maternity leave is 100% of the regular salary, paid by social security. Mothers can take an unpaid leave of up to three months any time before the child reaches age three.
Fathers can take seven days of paid paternity leave. Fathers may also take over any unused part of the maternity leave.
Mothers can take nine months of adoption leave for adopting a baby or 15 months for adopting more than one baby.
